Organ Lessons

Thank you for your interest in organ lessons!

Many of my organ students take organ lessons because they are asked to play organ for church meetings. Some come to me with excitement, others with dread. Other students sign up because they love the repertoire of the organ and want to develop their skills.

Confession time: I was a reluctant organist at first. I didn’t want to be stuck on the organ bench every Sunday for the rest of my life. But once I discovered playing the organ well can add to the spirit of meetings and bless the lives of those in my congregations, I fell in love with the organ. There is so much good organ music out there – both sacred and secular. And there are so many amazing organs to play on.

Whatever your reason for taking organ lessons, I am here to assist you on your journey. I promise to instill a love of the organ in you. I will share my extensive knowledge and experience to aid your playing, and help you find the motivation you need.

Organ lessons are extremely individualized, and I look forward to working with you to reach your goals. Organ lessons can be scheduled weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly.

If you don’t live in the Houston area, but still would like to take lessons with me, good news! I teach online lessons. I have worked with students all over, and it is a joy to not be limited by geography. Click here for more details

Motivation

If you are feeling overwhelmed about your role as an organist, here are some quotes that might help ease the pain you may or may not be feeling 🙂

"Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord. Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end”
- Hymns, ix -
“Those who choose, conduct, present, and accompany the music may influence the spirit of reverence in our meetings more than a speaker does.”
- President Boyd K. Packer -

Fun Fact: President Nelson is an organist!

Here is what he says: “I get up before anybody else, and that gives me time for personal scripture reading, private prayer, and about a half-hour playing the hymns and Johann Sebastian Bach on the organ. By the time I leave home in the morning, my mind is filled with good things—the scriptures and fine music. This gets my day off to a good start better than any other way I’ve found.” (Ensign, June 1984)
